SQL Fundamentals

On this course you will learn to make effective use of Standard Query Language (SQL).

 

Objectives:

 

On completion of the course you will:
  • Have a better understanding of a relational system
  • Have mastered basic SQL syntax
  • Be able to create tables and views
  • Have practical experience of the most important SQL statements

Subjects covered:

  • Basic concepts such as tables, table-rows and columns
  • Reading tables with the SELECT statement
  • Selecting table rows using the WHERE clause of the SELECT statement
  • Grouping totals using the GROUP BYand HAVING clauses
  • Extracting data from several tables using the JOIN condition
  • Updating columns containing DATE or TIME values
  • Subquereies, correlated subselects and UNION
  • Inserting, changing and removing rows from a table
  • Defining tables using the CREATE statement
  • Accessing table-data using a VIEW

 

Participants:

This course is intended for anyone who intends working with a relational database. It also forms the basis for the more specialised database courses such as Application Programming and Database Administration

Prerequisites:

Basic PC skills for the practical exercises

Remarks:

The course material comprises a copy of the overhead sheets together with supplementary text

Classical, together with practical exercises using a Windows PC with DB2
